ASEF Young Leaders Summit
BACKGROUND ON THE ASEFYLS SERIES
The ASEF Young Leaders Summit (ASEFYLS) is the place for Asian and European young professionals and students to meet political leaders, top-tier business representatives, prominent thinkers and doers. It is the forum for youth to voice ideas and develop an ASEM Youth Declaration addressed to ASEM Leaders on youth issues that matter to Asia and Europe.
The ASEFYLS takes place alongside ASEM Summits or ASEM Ministers’ Meetings, where Leaders, Head of States or Ministers from the 51 ASEM partner countries, the EU and the ASEAN Secretariat discuss the status and future of Asia-Europe relations.
Key characteristics of ASEFYLS:
PROGRAMME HIGHLIGHTS
The ASEFYLS is built on 4 programme elements:
1) Knowledge Building Phase
Participants attend online crash courses on policy making, ASEM and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and build up thematic expertise for the conference on site.
2) On-Site Programme
The programme includes a variety of learning formats: thematic lectures, human libraries, skills trainings, collaborative working groups and dialogue sessions between junior and senior leaders from politics, business and academia.
3) Connections with ASEM Leaders
At the ASEFYLS, one-to-one meetings are arranged between participants and their respective ASEM Leaders and Delegates. ASEFYLS representatives also have the opportunity to make an intervention at ASEM Summits or Ministers’ Meeting and present their Calls for Action.
4) Spin-off activities
The ASEFYLS format allows participants to initiate new projects and find Asian and Europe collaborators. Furthermore, ASEF invites prominent participants to join as junior trainers at ASEF Capacity Trainings taking place in 51 Asian and European countries.
